Discussion forumCategory: SociologyWhat is the meaning of Ethnomethodology?

Ethnomethodology is considered as the most important method in phenomenology among Sociological theories. ‘Ethno’ means people or common public. This common public adopts some procedures to create theories, called method. And when these are studied in scientific context, it is called ‘logy’. In this way Ethnomethodology is the scientific study of procedures by the common public.

Ethno = People or common public
Method = Procedure
Logy = Science

Ethnomethodology observes by laying emphasis on the concepts of general public as how people use the methods to continue their daily activities.
For illustration, if some member of society marries outside endogamy and the community does not punishes him, then all the people will resort this practice and the race would loose its grace and tone. But the Head of the race faces its challenge and discard him out of the society. To punish him they stop interaction and break up all the ties with him. The main objective behind this is to maintain the real system and who so ever tries to cause harm to it should be punished. In this illustration, to maintain caste system is a presumption that is to be maintained with its continuation. That is why boycott from caste is introduced. Its study is known as Ethnomethodology.
